This is a twelve-part documentary radio series I produced with Greg Sharrow of the Vermont Folklife Center. Greg asked me to review the Folklife Center’s interview collections about farming, fishing and hunting and see what might be made with it. All the material was wonderful, but I thought the hunting interviews had great radio potential. There were strong voices and stories and the interviews offered a rare insider’s perspective on the culture and practices of hunting in Vermont. I didn’t know what I was going to make with the material but as I logged the tape, a series of themes emerged and I decided to make short programs that could be aired before or after longer radio programming. I did a lot of additional interviewing for this series with hunters from all across the state and I’m here to report that hunters are some of the best storytellers around.
Programs from the deer hunting series have aired on NPR’s Hearing Voices, WTIP, KTNA and VPR.
